UFC 285: Jon Jones vs Ciryl Gane Results and Review

Vegas hosted the return of the GOAT Jonny 'Bones' Jones and MMA's fastest growing Heavyweight Ciryl 'Bon Gamin' Gane.

Jon Jones (27-1) vs Ciryl Gane (11-2) - Heavyweight Championship Bout

It was over before it started. A few strikes on the feet. Jones forces the takedown and maintained some control. As Ciryl managed to find his back against the fence, Jon Bones Jones locked in a razor sharp guillotine to end the fight within 2 minutes and 4 seconds.

Well he said he would make it look easy and he absolutely delivered. The greatest fighter of all time could never be doubted. Jones rocked the mic moments after and promised a fight with Stipe Miocic in the Summer. One thing is for sure... Jon Jones is a problem at Heavyweight. Congratulations to the Goat Jon 'Bones' Jones for cementing his legacy as the greatest to ever step inside of the Octagon.

Alexa Grasso (16-3) defeats Valetina Shevchenko (23-4) - Flyweight Championship Bout

In Round 1, Grasso lands a peircing 1-2 twice shocking everyone in attendance and stealing the first point. Valentina changed strategies as she does so well being the more championship experienced fighter. Securing takedowns and gaining top control time in round 2.

Shevchenko initiated more grappling to earn another point in the third. Some good takedown defence kept the fight standing in the fourth. Until a spinning back kick attempt in the fourth, exposed the back of Valentina where Grasso was fast to take the neck and back of the champ. Relentlessly forcing the choke to give Mexico another champion ending one of the greatest female reigns in MMA history. Congratulations Alexa Grasso!

Shavkat Rakhmonov (17-0) defeats Geoff Neal (15-5) in Round 3 via Submission (Standing Rear Naked Choke) - Welterweight Bout

The fight I was expecting. The two competitors harness so much power and displayed it for the fans by throwing at 90% with most punches and pocket strikes. Rakhmonov proved to be the more versatile striker, executing a combination of jabs, straights, muay thai knees and kicks.

Neal landed a number of his signature 'hands of steel' hurting the Kazakh, to his enjoyment. Fight of the Night for sure, as both men's chins are indescribably tough. In the final minute of the fight, Shavkat squeezes behind Neal from a grappling position and chokes Geoff Neal out. Ridiculously good fight.

Mateusz Gamrot (22-2) defeats Jalin Turner (13-6) via Split Decision - Lightweight Bout

Good first round exchanges saw a solid feeling out first round. Gamrot seems to have some advantages when mixing up the grappling, however Jalin Turner's 6.5 inch reach advantage inflicted some real damage on his Polish opponent. Overall, a very close fight with an understandable split decision.

Bo Nickal (4-0) defeats Jamie Pickett (13-9) in Round 1 via Submission (Arm Triangle) - Middleweight Bout

Bo opens with a massive missed head kick, slipping and falling over. After a rolling a punch, the three-time NCAA Champion went to work with a number of flawless transitions, sinking in his hooks and tightening up an arm triangle. Nickal makes it miserable for Pickett for almost 3 minutes before Jamie eventually taps. The hype is real.

Prelims

Cody Garbrandt (13-5) vs Trevin Jones (13-10) - Bantamweight Bout

A completely rebranded Cody Garbrandt showed tones of the Champion we remember with quick footwork and perfectly timed single punches and takedowns.

The former 135lb Champ technically and tactically secured the first 2 rounds and then coasted most of the third to the fan's disapproval. Jones landed a few round winning shots but failed to turn up throughout the whole 15 minutes.

Dricus Du Plessis (19-2) defeats Derek Brunson (23-9) in Round 2 via KO/TKO - Middleweight Bout

Both men put everything on the line and really emptied the gas tanks. With massive shots and takedowns conceded by both sides, the fight seemed even until mid-round 2.

The South African showed a little more composure as flailing overhands whistled through the air, a number of which rocked Brunson sending him crashing down to the ground. A few more ground strikes saw a towel throw from the American corner with 2 seconds left of the round.

Amanda Ribas (11-3) defeats Viviane Araujo (11-5) via Decision - Flyweight Bout

A tough fought battle between two of the fiercest Flyweight Brazilians. Amanda showed impressive work on the feet and strong boxing. Knocking down her opponent twice in the second and then claiming the win. Ribas went on to call out the former champion Carla Esparza, which would be an amazing fight.

Early Prelims

Ian Garry (11-0) defeats Kenan Song (19-7) in Round 3 via KO/TKO - Welterweight Bout

Cameron Saaiman (8-0) defeats Mana Martinez (10-4) in Round 3 via Decision - Bantamweight

Tabatha Ricci (8-1) defeats Jessica Penne (14-8) in Round 2 via Submission - Strawweight Bout

Farid Basharat (10-0) defeats Da'Mon Blackshear (12-5) via Decision - Bantamweight Bout

Loik Rhadzhabov (17-4) defeats Esteban Ribovics (11-1) via Decision via Lightweight Bout

UFC 285 enters the history books in true UFC PPV fashion with 2 new Champions. A real MMA fans delight with a symphonic showcase of elite level athletes. Las Vegas did not disappoint with talented UFC Roster constantly growing. Jones cemented his legacy as the Goat, Mexico continue to dominate in MMA with a new Champion and the Kazakh Boogeyman will look for his next victim. Incredible night.
